Winner, Winner, Chicken... Sandwich: Jack in the Box's Asian Fried Chicken Food Truck Series Sandwich

While we had a great time on our recent Disneyland trip, things have been a bit stressful since we returned. In addition to dealing with some health issues, we also learned that the wiring in our house was done pretty cheaply and shoddily. The repair guys we hired said we were lucky that a fire hadn’t been started in our house… and then they found evidence of a fire in the attic. So, having dealt with all that, I don’t have the energy for a big entry this week. Fortunately, Jack in the Box has come to my rescue, with a brand-new, limited-time chicken sandwich: the Asian Fried Chicken sandwich, part of their Food Truck series.

The description reads that the sandwich features “crispy all-white meat chicken strips, crunchy Asian slaw, fresh cucumbers, and a bold gochujang mayo” on a toasted baguette. The toppings on my sandwich were plentiful, but they didn’t overwhelm the chicken. Perhaps more importantly, the vegetables were nice and crisp, as if they were fairly freshly sliced and prepared. They also didn’t make the sandwich soggy.

The contrast between the slaw and cucumbers and fried chicken made for a nice mix of flavors and textures. The gochujang mayo gave the sandwich a bit of a zip, but wasn’t overly spicy. (My wife doesn’t like spicy foods very much. When she tried a bite of this sandwich, she liked it well enough to order one for herself a few days later.) And the bread was really good. Too often, a fast-food chain version of this sort of sandwich ruins it with a lower-quality bun, that’s either too dense, too stale, or too squishy. This was just right.

If I had any complaint, it was that the chicken was kind of shoved to one side of the sandwich, and I had to push it back into the middle. More chicken would have maybe corrected that. On the other hand, this is a pretty filling sandwich already, so I don’t know if it needs more stuff in it. On the plus side, the chicken was moist and well-cooked, not dried out.

As of today, I’ve had all three of the Food Truck Series sandwiches, and they were all pretty good. I honestly don’t have the highest opinion of food truck food, so I would say these are probably as good as you’d get from a food truck. The prime rib cheesesteak was just fine, but it tastes like a decent cheesesteak, so it was probably the least surprising of the three.

The pork belly BLT was a bit of a surprise; Arby’s had done a pork belly sandwich not too long ago, and their pork belly was pretty fatty and slimy, with the fat pretty much overwhelming everything else on the sandwich. The pork belly on the Jack in the Box one tasted much better. Overall, I would order any of these sandwiches again, but I’d be more likely to repeat the Asian fried chicken or the pork belly BLT.

This week’s Pop! of the Week isn’t exactly a Pop. I’ve enthused about Funko’s Monsters of Wetmore Forest Pop! line in the past; in recent months, they’ve been issuing plush versions of the monsters as well. Yesterday, we received the plush version of Snuggle-Tooth, and she’s adorable. Here she is with her Pop! counterpart, and with our 12-pound cat, Rumplestilskin, shown for scale.

And that’s it for this week! I’m going to go enjoy the fact that our house isn’t burning down. Do you have a favorite chicken sandwich, or any thoughts on the Food Truck Series from Jack in the Box? Let me know in the comments.

See you next week!
